Carl
Sagan Discovery Center
at The Children's Hospital
at Montefiore
The
Montefiore Medical Center, as part of its plan to construct
a state-of-the-art children's hospital facility in the Bronx,
New York, is creating The Carl Sagan Discovery Center. The
Sagan Center will be the Nation's first science learning
project developed in conjunction with a major children's
health care initiative and housed within the walls of a
children's hospital. An extraordinary program of science
learning and discovery is being developed that will be integrated
into the very fabric of the children's hospital. Educational
software and Web sites will be important elements along
with computers and custom-designed communications tools
available for the children and their families to connect
with the larger world of learning. The rooftop will feature
a summer garden, planetarium, and observatory. NASA supports
this project and has offered access to our image library
of photographs to adorn the walls. Perhaps we can provide
two-dimensional projections that allow the bed-ridden patients
of the hospital to take virtual flights over Mars from their
hospital beds. We are also discussing a partnership that
might include virtual surgery and telemedicine applications
and programming.
Stay
tuned for more details about this exciting venture.
